BioThere was once a canyon road, and it was guarded by a sphinx.
A person came walking down the road. She stopped when she saw the sphinx, and looked around, but there was no other way to turn. "If I can answer your riddle, will you let me pass?" she said.
The sphinx nodded, and said, "I am Laurentius."
The woman knew that you must only speak the truth to a sphinx, but this sounded like a statement, not a riddle. So the woman said, "yes."
The sphinx roared and raised sharp claws, and the woman ran back the way she'd come.
Presently another person came walking down the road. He saw the sphinx and stoppe,d but there was no other way to turn. So he said, "if I can answer your riddle, will you let me pass?"
The sphinx nodded, and said, "I am Laurentius."
The man knew that you must only speak the truth to a sphinx, but this didn't sound like a riddle. But maybe it was. "No you're not," said the man.
The sphinx roared and came forward, raising sharp claws, and the man ran back the way he'd come.
The sphinx waited, and finally a third person came walking down the road. The person saw the sphinx and stopped and said, "if I can answer your riddle, will you let me pass?"
The sphinx nodded and said, "I am Laurentius."
The person said, "are you?"
The sphinx stood and stepped aside, and let the person pass.
